In support of local schools and the community, Gershow Recycling donated the use of a junk car to the Sayville High School SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) chapter. The car serves as a reminder to students to drive safely.

The junk car was on display in front of the school to show students the consequences of driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, as well as the dangers of driving while distracted by texting or talking on cell phones. The Sayville SADD chapter thanked Gershow for its assistance and its use of the vehicle.

Collects 30,000 Pounds of Scrap; Proceeds to Support Cleanup of Tesla Science Center Property

Gershow Recycling was a sponsor of the “Metal for Tesla” scrap metal fundraiser at the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe (TSCW) in Shoreham on March 20. During the event, Gershow collected 30,000 pounds of scrap metal, which wound up being recycled and kept out of landfills. Through the fundraiser and donations made by Gershow, $9,500 was raised to support the organization. Proceeds went to support renovations at Wardenclyffe. In addition to its sponsorship of the event, Gershow provided the use of a scrap metal container and handed out hats, magnets, sweatshirts and brochures to those in attendance.

Since 2013, Gershow has provided scrap metal containers for the TSCW as part of its efforts to help the non-profit organization renovate Wardenclyffe, which is the site of the only remaining laboratory of the famous inventor, Nikola Tesla. Plans for the property include a Tesla museum, an Education and Visitor Center with space to host community workshops and an innovation center for startup companies to help launch their businesses.

Gershow Recycling recently donated the use of a wrecked car in support of the Town of Huntington’s Anti-Drunk and Distracted Driving Campaign. Presented by Mark Cuthbertson, Councilman, Town of Huntington, and the Huntington Town Board, the program reminds residents of the dangers of drunk or distracted driving during the holidays.

Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling, took part in a press conference that was held on December 7, along with local elected officials, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), law enforcement personnel and Keys for Karen, a nonprofit organization formed by a local family who lost a loved one to a drunk driver.

Mr. Gershowitz thanked the Town, MADD and Keys for Karen for their public awareness efforts and noted that Gershow takes in thousands of vehicles that were involved in serious accidents each year, some of which were the result of drunk driving. “There’s no reason to drink and drive,” he said. “We have too many conveniences today with our cell phones and apps. If you don’t want to hurt yourself or, worse than that, if you don’t want to hurt someone else, don’t drink and drive.”

On November 24-25, in celebration of Thanksgiving and in assisting the community, Gershow Recycling purchased 50 turkeys that the company distributed to local law enforcement agencies and fire departments. The turkeys were then given out to families in need. Those who received the turkeys included the Fire Department of New York’s (FDNY) Engine 231/Ladder 120 at Watkins Street; FDNY’s Engine 290/Ladder 103 “Pride of Sheffield Avenue”; FDNY’s Engine 332/Ladder 175 at Bradford Street; FDNY’s Rescue Squad 252; the Emergency Service Unit; and the New York Police Department’s 73rd and 75th Precincts.

For the eleventh year in a row, Gershow Recycling opened its Medford facility to local high school robotics teams participating in SBPLI’s Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition to receive free aluminum scrap. Eight high school robotics teams took advantage of the program and visited Gershow on December 14, 2019: Half Hollow Hills, Hauppauge, Kings Park, North Shore, Patchogue-Medford, Plainview-Old Bethpage, Southold and Westhampton Beach. The teams thanked Gershow for its support.
