Sam Gershowitz Receives ISRI Lifetime Achievement Award

Sam Gershowitz, the founder and owner of Gershow Recycling, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. (ISRI). The award is given to someone in the scrap recycling industry for their significant contributions to recycling.

Mr. Gershowitz started working at an early age, holding three to four jobs while attending high school. His first job was delivering cases of soda to families in apartment buildings. He later sold corrugated boxes and imported hardware for hardware stores and casket makers, then tanned furs for a furrier. During the winter, he signed up as an emergency worker with the New York City Sanitation Department.

As a young man who spent his weekends driving out to the Hamptons, Mr. Gershowitz noticed junk cars, old appliances and scrap metal left along the roadways. He recognized that Long Island had a solid waste problem and that something could be done about it.

In 1964, Mr. Gershowitz started Gershow Recycling. He started mining junk cars out of municipal landfills, paying a dollar for each car he pulled out. He opened his first location in Central Islip and made his brother Lou his business partner. Together, they built their own car flattener. The cars were crushed, then sold to local scrap dealers at a profit.

In 1974, Mr. Gershowitz opened a new location in Medford. Since then, under his leadership, Gershow expanded to nine locations with over 750 employees. The company has made numerous improvements over the years, including the development of its headquarters, the electrification of the shredder and new recycling equipment.

In addition to his business, Mr. Gershowitz has been very active in the community. He has supported the Strang Cancer Prevention Institute and the fund drive for the Southampton Hospital’s Montauk Medical Center. He also worked with the Suffolk County Board of Rabbis to provide funding for a menorah display at Islip MacArthur Airport for Hanukkah.

Each year, Mr. Gershowitz offers an Environmental Conservation Scholarship to graduating high school students who wish to continue their studies in either environmental science or engineering. He also supported Can Tabs for Kids, which benefits the Sunrise Fund in the fight against childhood cancer, and Play for Peace, a soccer tournament that uses sport as a way for people from different ethnic backgrounds to find common ground.

“I wish to thank ISRI for bestowing this honor on me and recognizing Gershow Recycling,” Mr. Gershowitz said. “Like Gershow, our industry has come a long way since 1964. I feel today we are recognized as a vital part of the American economy, American industry and America’s manufacturing industry, and we are also key to maintaining and improving our environment. We have a quite a lot to be proud of and we know we go to work each day with the gratification that we are making a positive impact, not only in our local communities, but in making our world a better, cleaner place to live in.”

Gershow Grants Environmental Conservation Scholarships to Local Graduating High School Seniors

Despite the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on local businesses, Gershow Recycling continued to provide financial assistance to graduating high school seniors from Long Island and the New York metropolitan area with its Environmental Conservation Scholarship. Now in its 12th year, this one-time, $1,000 scholarship is given to a student who intends to continue their studies in either engineering or environmental science after graduation.

Most high schools also had to adapt to the pandemic as they transitioned to virtual scholarship ceremonies. This allowed local Gershow managers to record congratulatory messages for the recipients that could be viewed online.

This year’s recipients were Audrey Barry (Bellport High School), Nolan Kata (Bay Shore High School), Aden Hunter (Lindenhurst High School), Byanca Caetano-Soares (Patchogue-Medford High School), Brandon Thomas (Valley Stream Central High School), Jaden McAleese (Freeport High School), Subhana Zafar (Walt Whitman High School), Mary Tsahas (Herricks High School), Leyal Hamdan (Longwood High School), Kylie Plitt (Riverhead High School), and Clenio Correia (Frederick Douglass Academy VII High School).

For the second year in a row, Gershow partnered with the Medford Chamber of Commerce to present the Gershow Recycling/Medford Chamber of Commerce Scholarship. This year’s recipient was Adrian Rutkowski of Patchogue-Medford High School. This one-time award in the amount of $1,000 is presented to a Patchogue-Medford High School student who intends to continue studying environmental science, recycling or business.

Gershow Recycling Donates Aluminum Scrap to Local High School Robotics Teams

For the eleventh year in a row, Gershow Recycling opened its Medford facility to local high school robotics teams participating in SBPLI’s Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition to receive free aluminum scrap. Eight high school robotics teams took advantage of the program and visited Gershow on December 14, 2019: Half Hollow Hills, Hauppauge, Kings Park, North Shore, Patchogue-Medford, Plainview-Old Bethpage, Southold and Westhampton Beach. The teams thanked Gershow for its support.

Gershow Recycling Donates Wrecked Vehicle to Town of Huntington for Anti-Drunk and Distracted Driving Campaign

Gershow Recycling recently donated a wrecked car in support of the Town of Huntington’s Anti-Drunk and Distracted Driving Campaign. Presented by Mark Cuthbertson, Councilman, Town of Huntington, and the Huntington Town Board, the program reminds residents of the dangers of drunk or distracted driving during the holidays.

John Zaher, Representative, Gershow Recycling, took part in a press conference that was held on December 16, along with local elected officials, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), law enforcement personnel and a local family who lost a loved one to a drunk driver. He thanked the Town and MADD for their public awareness efforts and noted that Gershow takes in thousands of vehicles that were involved in serious accidents each year, some of which were the result of drunk driving. “Gershow Recycling is proud to be part of this campaign, which shows the dangers of driving under the influence and distracted driving,” said Mr. Zaher.

On November 26, in celebration of Thanksgiving and in assisting the local community, Gershow Recycling purchased 50 turkeys that the company distributed to local law enforcement agencies and fire departments. The turkeys were then given out to local families in need. Those who received the turkeys included FDNY Rescue Squad 252, FDNY Engine 231/Ladder 120 at Watkins Avenue, FDNY Rescue Company Number 2, FDNY Ladder 103 “Pride of Sheffield Avenue,” NYPD Emergency Services Unit Truck #7, FDNY Engine 332/Ladder 175; NYPD 75th Precinct and NYPD 73rd Precinct.

Russian Scrap Metal CEOs See Advanced Recycling Technology Firsthand

On September 13, Gershow Recycling hosted 14 owners and CEOs of scrap metal companies from Russia for a tour of its Medford facility. The guests were part of Ruslom, a trade organization comprised of representatives from the Russian scrap metal industry. The group recently came to the United States to visit numerous scrap metal recycling companies across the country, including Gershow.

Gershow is highly recognized for having one of the most technologically advanced scrap metal processing facilities in the world. Its technology allows the company to minimize metal waste entering landfills, helping to protect the local environment.

“This is one of the best tours I have taken,” said Victor Kovshevny, Director, Ruslom, who helped organize the visit. “Gershow should be proud of the work they do. We are very grateful to the company for showing us their facility and for hosting us.”
