Gershow also donated the use of its Huntington facility to enable teams to practice in the week leading up to the tournament.

Twenty-two teams from twelve fire departments participated in the tournament, which involved groups of five firefighters working to extricate a “victim” from a “crash” using the Jaws of Life. Each team was judged on the amount of time it took to perform the extrication, the handling of equipment and the safety procedures they followed. After the tournament, the vehicles were brought back to Gershow’s facility, where they were shredded and recycled.

Gershow Recycling Continues to Offer Graduating High School Seniors the Environmental Conservation Scholarship

(Medford, New York) — Once again, Gershow Recycling is providing one-time, $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors from Long Island and the metropolitan New York area. The program is now available to all local school districts in which Gershow’s facilities are located.

For the past 15 years, Gershow has offered a one-time, $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from Patchogue-Medford High School, Bellport High School and Longwood High School. In 2013, the company extended that opportunity for graduating seniors from the following high schools: Bay Shore High School, Walt Whitman High School in South Huntington, Lindenhurst High School, Valley Stream Central High School, Freeport High School, Herricks High School in New Hyde Park, and Frederick Douglass Academy VII in Brooklyn. The program expanded again the following year to Riverhead High School.

Students must pursue a degree in engineering or environmental sciences when entering college in order to be eligible for the scholarship.

Started in 1964 by Sam Gershowitz, Gershow Recycling began as a two-man operation with a tractor and trailer, a boom truck and the first portable car flattener. Now with its second generation carrying on its legacy, Gershow employs over 750 people on Long Island and the metropolitan New York area, contributing millions of dollars to the local economy, while helping to preserve the region’s environment.

2019 marks the fifteenth consecutive year that Gershow has offered the scholarship. “Since 1964, Gershow Recycling has been leading the way in preserving Long Island’s environment. This scholarship reflects our company’s goals of environmental conservation and the need to encourage the pursuit of advanced degrees to enhance our region’s and nation’s competitiveness,” said Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling.

Students who are interested in applying for the scholarship may contact their respective high schools.

Gershow Recycling Donates Wrecked Vehicle to Town of Huntington for Anti-Drunk and Distracted Driving Campaign

Kevin Gershowitz (standing behind podium), President, Gershow Recycling, addresses the members of the media during a press conference announcing the launch of the Town of Huntington’s Anti-Drunk and Distracted Driving Campaign. Gershow donated a junk vehicle to the town as part of the campaign.

Gershow Recycling recently donated a wrecked car in support of the Town of Huntington’s Anti-Drunk and Distracted Driving Campaign. Presented by Mark Cuthbertson, Councilman, Town of Huntington, and the Huntington Town Board, the program reminds residents of the dangers of drunk or distracted driving during the holidays.

Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling, took part in a press conference that was held on December 10, along with local elected officials, law enforcement personnel and a local family who lost a loved one to a drunk driver. They urged everyone not to get behind the wheel if they have been drinking.

“There is no excuse of why you should be in a car under the influence, whether you are behind the wheel or you are a passenger with someone who is under the influence,” Mr. Gershowitz said. “Just don’t do it.”

Gershow Recycling Donates More than 1,100 Pounds of Aluminum Scrap to Seven Long Island High School Robotics Teams

For 10 years, Gershow Recycling has opened its Medford facility to Long Island robotics teams, including coaches, students and their parents, to enable the teams to collect aluminum scrap metal to construct a 120-pound robot for School-Business Partnerships of Long Island’s (SBPLI) FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition Long Island Regional. This year, seven teams benefited from Gershow’s Scrap Metal Day donation event, which took place on December 8.

The seven teams who attended Scrap Metal Day included Bridgehampton High School, Half Hollow Hills High School, Hauppauge High School, Plainview-Old Bethpage High School, Rocky Point, Westhampton Beach High School and The Wheatley School.

Now entering its 20th season, the SBPLI FIRST Robotics Competition Long Island Regional is held annually at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Once again, the organization is hosting two regional tournaments across two sets of consecutive dates: March 24-27 and March 27-30, 2019. Each event will serve as a separate regional, with different teams from across Long Island, New York City, the United States and around the world competing in separate alliances and tournament rounds.

Play for Peace Sponsors Present Long Island Head Start in Patchogue with $1,000 Donation

Sponsors from the Annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament present a check for $1,000 to Long Island Head Start in Patchogue. Pictured (left to right): Annette Harris, Director of Program Operations, Long Island Head Start; Jonathan Abrams, Manager, Gershow Recycling; Lina Ortiz, Center Manager, Long Island Head Start; Robert Calarco, Suffolk County Legislator; Christopher Kelly, Vice President of Marketing, TriTec Real Estate Company; and Ana Figueroa, Policy Council and Volunteer Supervisor, Long Island Head Start.

On September 18, sponsors of the Annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament visited Long Island Head Start in Patchogue Village to present Center Manager Lina Ortiz with a check in the amount of $1,000. The money comes from funds donated to the tournament from sponsors, including Gershow Recycling, TriTec Real Estate and others.

Play for Peace brings together diverse nationalities within the community for a full day of World Cup-style soccer, with a goal of promoting sports as a way for people from various backgrounds to find common ground. The tournament was first organized in 2009 through the office of then-Legislator Jack Eddington in conjunction with the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League. After Legislator Robert Calarco was elected in 2011, he carried on the tradition.

Monies raised from the event are donated to local organizations, like Long Island Head Start, which provides a creative curriculum to Patchogue students ages three to five. Head Start plans to use the donation to purchase two projectors for its smartboards. As a comprehensive learning environment respectful of all cultures, Long Island Head Start perfectly exemplifies the spirit of the event.

On August 15, more than 30 children and teenagers from the Bellport area boarded a charter bus at Robert Rowley Park for a day of fun and excitement at Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Gershow Recycling sponsored the trip, which was organized by Steven Hughes, a Bellport resident and a longtime Gershow customer. Mr. Hughes asked the company for assistance in sponsoring the trip and Gershow agreed. The sponsorship went to cover the costs of transportation and admission to the amusement park.

Mr. Hughes personally invited the children to spend a day at Dorney Park, with the families’ permission. The children, whom Mr. Hughes knows from the Bellport community, have few opportunities to travel and socialize with their peers in a fun and positive atmosphere.
